Historical Overview

Malvern Manor stands as one of the oldest surviving structures in Malvern, Iowa. Constructed in 1869, the building was among the earliest permanent structures established during the community’s rapid growth alongside the expansion of the railroad. Originally serving as a private residence associated with Isaac Ringland, one of Malvern’s early civic leaders, the property played an important role in the town’s formative years as settlers, businesses, and transportation networks transformed the region into a thriving agricultural community.

Following the deaths of the original owners, the property entered a new chapter. In the early 1890s, the structure was expanded and converted into the Cottage Hotel, providing lodging for travelers, railroad workers, and visitors passing through southwest Iowa. The arrival of the railroad brought increased traffic and economic growth to Malvern, and the hotel became an important part of the town’s commercial activity. Additional expansions were completed during the hotel’s most successful years, increasing its capacity and allowing it to serve a growing number of guests.

Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the building changed ownership several times and underwent numerous renovations. At various points it operated under different names, including the Piper Hotel, while continuing to serve visitors to the area. As automobile travel gradually replaced rail travel as the primary means of transportation, many small-town hotels across the Midwest experienced declining business. Malvern Manor was no exception, and by the mid-1950s the property’s role as a hotel had come to an end.

In 1956, the building was repurposed as a nursing and rest home. New additions were constructed, including an expanded wing designed to accommodate residents requiring long-term care. This period marked one of the most significant physical transformations in the property’s history, as rooms were modified and facilities adapted to meet the needs of elderly residents. The nursing home remained in operation for approximately two decades before changing regulations and operational challenges eventually led to its closure.

Rather than being abandoned, the property evolved once again. Beginning in the 1970s, the former nursing home became a residential care facility serving individuals with a variety of mental health, developmental, and addiction-related challenges. For many residents, the facility became a long-term home rather than a temporary institution. During this era, the building witnessed decades of daily life, personal struggles, recoveries, friendships, and loss. Numerous individuals spent significant portions of their lives within its walls, creating a deep and often emotional connection to the property.

The facility continued operating until 2005. Following regulatory concerns and operational difficulties, the property was ultimately closed. Many furnishings, medical items, and personal belongings remained inside, leaving portions of the structure frozen in time. The closure marked the end of nearly fifty years of healthcare-related operations and ushered in a period of uncertainty for the historic building.

A decade later, paranormal investigator and filmmaker Josh Heard became involved with the property after initially visiting Malvern to investigate another reportedly haunted location. Drawn to both the building’s history and its reputation for unusual activity, Heard eventually acquired the property and began preserving its legacy. Under his stewardship, Malvern Manor has become one of the Midwest’s most recognized paranormal destinations, attracting investigators, historians, documentary filmmakers, and visitors from across the country. Today, the manor serves as both a historic landmark and an active investigation site, where its documented history and reported paranormal phenomena continue to intersect.
